Spanish Steps

Site of The Spanish Steps, 2014

The Spanish Steps was situated at 277 Victoria Dock Road. This pub was closed and demolished in 1992. The Custom House Hotel with attached pub currently occupies the site of the Spanish Steps and the nearby Artful Dodger.

My parents left The Anglers Retreat in Dagenham in December 1981 to live in and manage the Spanish Steps in Canning Town until the summer of the following year 1981, when they were dismissed following the theft of the safe from the downstairs office in the middle of the night. Interestingly the relief couple who took over the running of the pub, arrived at lunch time from Newcastle and admitted that they had been informed of their new position the day before (i.e. before the safe was stolen). Needless to say the pub’s owner – whose name escapes me – had a bit of reputations locally.
