The Artful Dodger was situated at 272-3 Victoria Dock Road. This pub was formerly known as the Railway Tavern. It closed in the 1980s and was demolished in 2001. The Custom House Hotel with attached pub currently occupies the site of the Artful Dodger and the nearby Spanish Steps (see photo above).

This pub was present by 1886, probably earlier.  In these early days it sold the beers of Allsopp’s Brewery of Burton-on-Trent.  By the early 1980s it was a free house, trading as Artful Dodger and selling beers from the Tolly Cobbold Brewery of Ipswich.
