Essex Arms

The Essex Arms was situated at 92 Victoria Dock Road. This was a Courage pub. In 2005 it was taken over by the management of the nearby Peacock boxing gym, formerly based at the Peacock, Freemasons Road E16. It was renamed the Peacock but closed in 2008 and has since been demolished, apparently to make way for a DLR extension. The Essex Arms may have got its name from the fact that although some parts of North Woolwich were in Kent until 1889 the pub was in the Essex part.

This had become The Peacock by at least 2002. I was living in Stratford E15 at the time, and the pub enjoyed a short resurgence as a rave venue for the promoters Resonance (http://www.resonance1.net/history.php), and regularly got down to their Sunday old skool hardcore/jungle alldayer. A large pub with a decent backyard too which sometimes held a barbeque in the summer. It lasted until late 2007 or early 2008 as I recall. Good times before the regeneration of Canning Town kicked in.
