The Woolpack

This pub was in the High Street on the corner of Angel Way. It was a pub in the 1970's and my one memory of it from drinking there was that it had a rings board. Rings is a game similar to darts, the board has about 15 hooks on it and players throw small rubber or plastic rings at the board. Any ring that lands on a hook scores that number of points and there is a finishing ritual similar to throwing a double. The particular variant of the game played in SW Essex pubs was brought over from Cork in Ireland in the 1920s and 1930s by workers at the Fords plant in Cork who came to work at the Ford plant in Dagenham. The game has largely died out in pubs but it is still played at a few clubs in the Dagenham area. When I worked in Romford in 1989 it had become Amelia's wine bar with Secrets night club attached. Later it became RM1 night club. This closed in 2003 and planning permission was granted for flats to be built on the site but nothing has happened yet and the building is closed and boarded up.
