This was a pub in the south west corner of Market Place. The site is
now occupied by shops. Although I
have no memories of this pub myself a late friend of mine did tell me about
drinking there in the 1960's. This pub dates back to 1678 and was rebuilt in
1898. A new Kings Head was built in 1971 at 26 The
Liberty. part of the Liberty Shopping Centre. |

I remember very well, my dad taking me into
the off licence part of the Kings Head pub one evening in about 1964. He
was buying some drinks to take home, and I wanted some crisps. I can
vividly remember looking through the rear door of the off licence room
into one of the bars, it was packed with drinkers, and was quite smoky
too. I was only 9 then. The building did remain empty well into the
1970's. There was a large hall at the back of the pub called the Kings
Head Hall. It was used for many gatherings it its life. I never did visit
the Birdcage, when I was old enough to visit pubs.

I remember going to see bands at the Kings Head in the late
1960’s, such as Deep Purple and Quintessence. |

On the 75th anniversary of D-Day I was
looking through my father’s Squadron commemorative book and found pictures
of a party put on by the Romford Rotarians for the Officers of his Squadron
on January 6,1944 at the Kings Head. His Worship the Mayor attended. I’m
guessing it was held in the big back room that you describe. This was the
557th Bombardment Squadron (M) AAF that flew out of RAF Chipping Ongar,
known as AAF-162. It was a B-26 squadron and on D-Day they led the wing that
successfully bombed German positions facing Utah beach. |

In the early 1970's I attended a Judo class for
children in the Back Hall. My abiding memory being that the whole place
reeked of stale beer. |
