Golden Lion

The Golden Lion was situated at 5 Church Street, Stanground.
Built in the late 1930's near site of a smaller stone thatched pub of the same name which was destroyed by fire in 1931. Ceased trading April 2015. The pub's popularity and use declined significantly in the 21st century and the pub was closed, boarded up in October 2014 and ceased trading in April 2015. In 2015 a planning application was submitted to convert the Golden Lion into an Afghan community centre but was withdrawn without an explanation being given with the proposal receiving 383 objections from residents. The building became derelict and in 2017 an application to demolish the building and replace it with a store and four flats was also turned down by Peterborough City Council. Squatters occupied the building for a time and the building still stands empty.
