The Fox Inn was situated at 12 Fox
Road. This grade-II listed
pub was present by 1764 when it was known as The Rose & Crown. It was later
known as The Crown & Hounds and The Fox & Hounds, finally renamed The Fox in
1823. It was also later known as The Susan Plumb, after one of its
publicans. |

Cottage formerly Susan Plumb PH. Mid
C17, C18 and early C19. Timber framed, rendered and tiled roof, with old
tiles to rear pitch. Red brick ridge stack of two flues. Original three bay
and lobby entry plan, extended at north end and at rear and now forming an
L-plan. One storey and attic. Three dormers. Three enlarged window openings,
all with mid-late C20 casements. The doorway to the lobby is now blocked.
Extended at north end late C18 probably following conversion to public
house. Stack added at north end. At same time a lean-to for dairy and
scullery was made at east side. Early C19 rear wing added. Flint and red
brick. Single storey, tiled. Interior: Hall has ovolo moulded and leaf
stopped ceiling joists and inglenook hearth. Original staircase on east side
of hearth with landing balustrade of flat section twisted balusters. Parlour
with small abutting hearth with shaped back wall. Ceiling has an ovolo
moulded main beam and some joists with a similar moulding. |
