The Angel Inn was situated at 4-5
Church Street. Grade-II listed,
this inn closed in 1865 .It was built in the first half of the 18th century
and altered in the first half of the 19th century. A search of directories
shows 1828 Richard Overbury at the Angel in Henley Street. In 1830 and 1835
it is still Richard but it is described as an Inn and Posting House. By 1850
just described as a hotel it is now in Church street, occupant is Joseph
Overbury. As expected, I couldn’t find it in 1875. Clearly the street was
renamed between 1835 and 1850 and that makes sense because Church Street is
the primary extension of the existing Henley Street that now bleeds off to
the right. |
