From the SussexLive website: |
Romesh
Ranganathan's late dad owned the
now-demolished Prince of Wales pub in East Grinstead.
The pub, which used to be on Lingfield Road, inspired the 42-year-old's hit
comedy series on Sky, The Reluctant Landlord.
When it was still running, his dad let him get some experience practising
comedy with a regular slot in the pub.
As the students at the Sixth Form he was the head of at Hazelwick, he has
told stories in the past of how those who were old enough used to come and
see him perform in the pub.
When Romesh's dad passed away shortly after he quit his teaching job to go
full-time with comedy, something he thinks he did prematurely with
hindsight, the pub was handed down to him and his brother.
The two struggled with the costs of running the pub as locals started going
elsewhere, and discovered there was a lot to sort out with finances as the
pub had been heavily mortgaged.
The Prince of Wales pub was eventually demolished but Romesh managed to
honour his dad's legacy with the TV sitcom, in which he plays Romesh, a
character who has inherited a small-town Sussex pub from his late dad and is
now navigating life as the landlord with his wife’s help - sounds familiar. |
