George & Dragon

The George & Dragon was situated on Main Street. This listed building is now used as a private residence called The Old George & Dragon.

In 1978-79, while living in Grendon Underwood, Stuart and I frequented this lovely place often. The landlord, a local farmer and land owner, was a superb host, a quiet man at heart. Very mild mannered, and the clientele were very friendly and conversational. Songs in the old realm of English pubs were sang especially towards the 10.30pm closing time and everyone was into the party atmosphere with dancing and frolics. Among the key elements of competitiveness was a Depth Charge machine = an early video machine where a ship had to sink the submarines... I often set the high score but the bar girl always blew me out of the water! I loved her amazing talent and fancied her to Hell (10 years my senior) yet loathed being beaten without ego or malice.
It was a great pub. Like many, I am sorry its gone. And many others will go beyond now in 2019. I am now over 60 and have a simple idea that the old local is doomed. Once, the pub, like the church and corner shop, the butcher and baker shops, the local offy and alike, will be relegated to the past. In particular, the church and pub are where people congregated, but they are now relegated to the past. They no longer belong within or for the local community. Very sad.
