The Portland was situated on New Bridge Street.
It was next door to the old BBC and used be frequented by
clientele such as Mike Neville, the Look North news reader. This pub was
demolished in 1992. |

This was a serious boozer with a great atmosphere. Mince pies and beer after
art school then later after work. Hard and harsh gloss paintwork and people
in makeup from the BBC next door. A great table football powered by spit and
skill and a pinball all crammed into a tiny room towards the back of the
lounge. Met some brilliant people there and made friends that set me up for
London and beyond. |

Remember it
well as a student form 1975 to 1978. Great pub. Met there on Wednesdays with
the walking club, and also had many a pleasant lunchtime there!! Regretfully
also remember being showered in glass when some loon decided to smash one of
the windows. Newcastle had lost to Tottenham, from memory! |

Remember being in the Portland 1970's
Lindisfarne had just been on Look North to announce they were re-forming
came into the pub afterwards and ended up with an impromptu performance
including singalong versions of their many great songs, wonderful. |
