Royal Albert

The Royal Albert was situated at 178 Bells Road. This pub closed in 1973 and has now been demolished.
In 1980 we were looking for our first home and the pub came up just within our price range but it would have wiped us out and with the 17% interest rate at the time there was no prospect of us being able to do anything with the place except live in the meager accommodation so we looked elsewhere.
A shame as the land at the back was large. I just saw a huge waste and garden. However it proved big enough for 8 houses to be built on it. Had I realised that was a possibility that might have been different. But it must go down just to one of life's missed opportunities. Being a CAMRA member living in an old pub appealed. Especially as we had no kids at the time. I'm not sure that the better half agreed. When we saw it the bar was practically as it had been left years earlier. Even beer mats on tables about. Dust everywhere of course. Spit and sawdust sort of place, small, but with loads of character. Been knocked down now by heathens of builders.
