The Griffin was situated at 125 Clerkenwell Road.
This has been used as a strip/lap dancing venue since at least 2002. |
|
The pub was the
headquarters of the notorious Sabini gang, headed by Darby Sabini. It was
here in 1920, that Sabini, a boxer in his youth, broke the jaw of the leader
of the rival Elephant gang (so-called as they hailed from Elephant & Castle)
with a single punch - after they had come to Clerkenwell intent on causing
trouble. Soon after, Sabini was running his racecourse racket from the pub. |
