Now retail premises and Grade II*
Listed. The front was designed by J L Bond about 1820 but the hotel started
life in 1810 by Sir Gerard Noel of Exton incorporating parts of the older
Black Bull Inn that was first mentioned in 1546. Noel was defeated in the
election of 1812 and work ceased on the hotel after this. It remained empty
until 1825 when it was leased to and reopened by Thomas Standwell. The hotel
was originally called Standwell's Hotel and a separate Stamford Arms also
existed in St Mary's Street until after 1872 (can't find it in 1889).
Directory entries include; 1828-1835 Standwell's Hotel, Thomas Standwell;
