The Middlesex Arms was situated at Bignells
Corner. This pub was built as a road house in 1931 and closed in 1970. It
was demolished in 1973 to
make way for the A1(M). |

I believe that my aunt and uncle were
the last licensees of this pub before it closed in 1970. In 1969 my aunt,
Hilda Griffiths, took a booking for a party of about twenty places for a
Saturday evening. When they arrived Hilda very quickly realised that these
were special guests and passed around two blank menus for them to sign –
Matt Busby, George Best, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law, Pat Crerand, Nobby
Stiles and a number of others duly signed! |

My father was bars manager in the early
60s. I was in the Army and on leave for few weeks. I believe it was owned by
a Polish chap at the time and had a high class restaurant, frequented on
occasions by celebs - and the London underworld! |

The Middlesex Arms is featured in an
episode of "The Saint" that was directed by Roger Moore himself. I suspect
he must have been a patron at least once and likely chose the location
himself due to proximity to the studio. The episode in entitled "The
Contract" (from October 1964), and this entry from a TV website called
Avengerland has a synopsis that sums up the action filmed here that appears
towards the end of the episode:
Simon Templar (Roger Moore) and Eileen Ballinger (Elizabeth Weaver) go to
meet Dunstan (Dick Haymes) at a local pub (The Middlesex Arms, which has
been demolished). After powdering her nose Eileen is kidnapped by Famberg
(Robert Hutton) and his sidekick Ardossi (John Bennett). They are spotted by
Simon and Dunstan, but Famberg is able to escape whilst Ardossi is shot by
Dunstan.
The pub scenes inside (not sure if location or studio) begin at the 34:28
mark in this youtube video here:
