Park Tavern

Date of photo: 2013

The Park Tavern was situated at 2 Pound Tree Road, next to the Debenhams store. It was demolished sometime in the 1960's and a multi storey car park was built on the site. My father was one of the last Landlords of the pub before it's demise.

The original beer house that sat on this site opened in 1845, being called the Park Inn. It was owned by the Phoenix Brewery, before being owned by Crowley’s Alton Brewery and finally being taken over by Watney’s Brewery in 1947. Although the original building survived WWII, it was demolished and rebuilt in the late 1950s, having downstairs and upstairs bars. It was granted a full license in 1958, refurbished in 1986, and reopened with the name of Scullards. This did not last long as it closed in 1990 and was converted as can be seen in the photo to a Ladbrokes betting shop.
