The White Hart was situated on the Market Place. This pub has now been
converted into apartments. |

I have a small drinking glass my father
acquired during WW2 (see photo below). He was in the RAF and stationed
nearby, and during a visit by my mother – down from Glasgow – they visited
the White Hart.
On the glass is etched the words "Stolen from The White Hart Abridge". They
used to tell me about their time there – it was at the start of the Blitz,
and they believed the glasses were deliberately etched in this manner so as
to be taken as keepsakes. It was sad to read that the old pub has now been
demolished for flats. My parents are long dead but when I see the glass
memories come flooding back. |
