There is a story of the Masons Arms from
Christmas Eve,1880, about the landlord, Stephen Bartle, a blind man,
throwing out a customer, James Craggs (of Shildon), over a broken beer
glass. The customer was fairly drunk and fell onto the flag stones outside,
cracking open his head. He died later in the infirmary, at about 10am on
Christmas Day. My great great grandmother, Mrs Elizabeth Fawell, accompanied
the unfortunate customer to the Masons Arms that night. |
