Malt Shovel

Malt Shovel, Carlisle

The Malt Shovel was situated at 1 Rickergate. The original building was demolished in 1928, with the new one completed on 4th August 1928 to the design of Harry Redfern. Closed in 2003, it is now used as an Italian restaurant.

'On his border tour upon leaving Jedburgh, poet Robt. Burns stayed the night at The Malt Shovel, Rickergate, on the evening of 31st May, 1787. Next day he was informed that his mare, "Jennie Geddes", had been found trespassing on "the Bitts", a piece of unenclosed corporation grass; the horse was being held pursuant to a small fine levied by the Mayor, after which Burns continued on his journey to Dumfries, Ellisland, and eventually, Mossgiel.' (paraphrased from Burns, Excise Officer and Poet, by John Sinton, Supervisor of Inland Revenue, Carlisle. Published by the author.)
