The Eldern was situated on Eldern, Orton
Malborne. |
|
This was a new pub called The Shire Horse on a new estate
many years ago on the bus route in Orton Malborne with no garden and no car
park and standing alone next to two shops and opposite the local school, the
car park being on the opposite side of the shops. one door leading into the
lounge and the other into the pool room/ bar . both rooms having a split
level seating area the ceiling being painted coffee colour and all walls
brick no plaster in this pub. I used to do my disco (sublime soul disco in
the small bar) once had some of my limited 12” singles stolen on one night.
changed hands a number of times. The location of the pub was all wrong. it
was good to start with being close to new homes with just married couples
but as children came along there was nowhere for them. so people stopped or
change to pubs that had a play area (like the Windmill in Orton Longueville
), too small for eating there. |

My parents, Janice and Mike Bell
ran the pub for around 6 months before the landlord upped beer prices
etc. We actually lived in the pub too and I went to the primary school
across the road. It’s such a shame it didn’t work out as my parents were
really starting to turn the place around, even started doing food. |
