My Grandpa Shaw (John Benjamin Farnhill Shaw)
was the licensee of the Horse and Jockey at Birstall. When he left the
‘Jockey’ he became licensee of the Fox and Hounds at Shipley crossroads,
which has therefore always been known as ‘Fox Corner.’ The building was a
strange shape and Mum always said that it had been a Wallers house and all
their pubs were eccentric designs. It backed on to the Leeds-Liverpool canal
and some customers were the barge men who plied their trade on the canal.
They were known as ‘Boaties.’ They also got some trade as early as 6 o’clock
in the morning when men on their way to work in one of the local mills would
call in for a drink. During the first world war, they had a contingent of
soldiers billeted with them in the upstairs function room. There was a
'blowpipe' connecting the living quarters upstairs with the Bar downstairs.
It had a whistle at each end. When the barman was very busy, he would blow
the pipe and the whistle would sound, summoning help! |
