The Big Gun was situated at 13-17
Wicker on a site that’s been a pub since 1796. The current building was
built in 1900, described in CAMRA’s “Sheffield’s Real Ale Pubs Heritage
Guide” as “a two-pubs-in-one surprise package”. “The left side is an amalgam
of three rooms – tap room, dram shop and snug (all once having their own
separate street entrances) – and has Victorian fittings, including the
counter. The right side is a narrow saloon bar with late 1960s
reconstruction and ‘classy Victorian-style benches’ leading to a glazed-in
snug with similar seating and bell-pushes. “
The origin of the pub’s name is said to date from the English Civil War,
when in August 1644 Parliamentarians attacked nearby Sheffield Castle with a
demi-culverin cannon. That led to the surrender of the Royalists forces, and
later the demolition of the Castle. The later Castle Market on that site
closed in 2013 (reducing footfall in pubs on the Wicker).
This pub closed in September 2023 and the premises are to be turned into
(yet another) Pizza takeaway/restaurant and bedsits. |
