I lived opposite the pub down Courtney
Street the pub being on the corner of Waller Street and Holderness Road. The
customers of the pub would collect money through out the year to send their
kids on a day out to Withernsea. The children in them days rarely had the
opportunity to go on a summer holiday their parents not having sufficient
money in the 1950’s. One day each summer they would send them on a steam
train to the seaside at Withernsea to enjoy the fresh air and beach.
Southcoates rail station being 50 yards west of the pub. They would send
them on their way with a packed lunch and a 10 shilling note (a lot of money
in them days) to spend at their leisure. In the late afternoon they would
get another 10 shilling note along with food for their tea at the Pavillion
opposite the Withernsea Station. I was only 10 or 11 years old at the time.
I often wonder now how they managed to amass so much money to be able to
treat the children as a pound in them days would have represented 10 to 20%
of a persons weekly wages. ~A lot of the Nags Head clients would have been
dockers, factory or construction workers. We were working class people with
little disposable money but everyone looked out for each other too ensure we
were OK as their wasn’t the social infrastructure safety net you have today
to look after the most unfortunate. I left Courtney Street in the mid 60’s
and I believe the pub and street was demolished in the late 70’s |
