The Woolpack was situated at 2 Whetley Hill |

I have been trying to find some information on the web about an old pub in
White Abbey Road, Bradford. I think the pub was between the 'Lower Globe'
and 'The Melborn', only a short distance. The pub was not set back in its
own grounds but right up against the pavement. I think it may have been
called 'The Pack of Wool' or 'The Bale of Wool' or something in that line.
I mused at the time (~1985) that it should have been called The Woolpack to
bring it into line with 'Emmerdale Farm' on TV. I cannot find anything
about it on the web but what I do get refers to another pub called 'The Pack
Horse' a little lower down the road on Westgate.
I have taken a picture of an Asian shoe shop in the area and it is rather
reminiscent of that Pack of Wool pub. However if this is not it, then there
are no other existing candidates. I would like to, if you would, put the
picture on your web pages as 'Unknown' and see what others identify it as.
Unfortunately I cannot guarantee absolutely that this building was
definitely a former pub.
If my memory serves me right the inn sign (a pale yellow?) was a simple
drawing of a figure walking in the open, possibly with a long walking stick,
carrying on his back a frame holding what presumably is a bale of wool.
I never went into the pub and never saw anyone go in. Back in '85 it looked
on its last legs as a business. |

Yes the pub in question was called the Woolpack, and had been
called that a long time before said TV show. My Mum and Dad ran the pub from
about 1983 to 1986 , and it was a fairly busy pub for the most part with a
hard core of regulars, though it went downhill pretty rapidly after we left
as far as Ii understood, though I am fairly sure it lasted into the early
1990's at least. I remember going in there from time to time for old times
sake. It is sad to see pretty much all the old White Abbey pubs have shut
down, The Upper Globe , The Lower Globe, iIwas especially surprised about
the Melbourne. It used to be a really thriving pub when we were in the
Woolpack- I think Eamonn was the landlord then. |
