I was the landlord at The Fox & Goose from 1982 until 1985,
where I lived with my wife, Jean and two children.
The pub was just off Canal Road and Wharf Street but was demolished c1990
after the ring road had been built. Originally a Heys pub, it still had the
acid etched windows, it was taken over by Samual Websters brewery and the
rest, as they say, is history.
The landlord in 1900 was William Francis Howard who then purchased the Cock
& Bottle, and the previous landlady to myself was Alice Plumber.
I understand the pub which used to be near the old Bradford Canal and Basin
was used to stable horses for the barges that came along the canal to the
centre of Bradford in the late 19th and early 20th century. There were
certainly old stables still in existence at the bottom side of the building,
but these were only accesible by a long ladder and a trap door within the
wall of the pub. At the rear of, and attached to, the pub was a landrover
garage (Stamford Garage) which was at the same level as the old stables and
probably was an extension to them originally. I can remember one of past regulars telling me that wen he was a child, pre 1st WW, that boxing matches
were held atthe rear of the pub.
The area was originally a quite industrial area and was surrounded by old
mill type buildings and was a stones throw from the Conditioninhg House |
