The Quarry Gap was situated at 250 Dick
Lane. The Quarry Gap was made famous in 1864 when Emma Sharp who lived
locally became the first woman to walk 1,000 miles in 1,000 hours. She
charged spectators admission to a field behind the pub that she walked
around and hired a room in the pub to rest in. Bets were laid and attempts
at sabotage resulted in Emma carrying a gun and firing warning shots. She
made £500 and became a celebrity. The pub was reported closed in 2017 when a
planning application to convert the premises into a cafe was successful. |
