The White Lion was situated on Kirkgate. This pub has been demolished, with offices built on the site.
The White Lion dated back to the 18th century. It was used as election
headquarters for parliamentary candidates John Hardy and William Busfield in
the first half of the 19th century. The alteration to the frontage in the
Victorian era included lions’ heads. In 1899 the pub was acquired by Joshua
Tetley & Sons Ltd with “brewhouse and wine and spirits vaults”. The pub
closed in 1963. |
