Talbot Hotel

The Talbot Hotel was situated at 45 Kirkgate. This pub was built in 1879, the architects being Andrews and Pepper. Closed in 1974 and now in retail use. This building replaced the original Talbot Hotel (see bottom photo) which dated back to 1677 when it was a well known coaching inn with extensive gardens.

Outside the hotel there used to be a pair of statues of talbots, which were large hunting dogs. The statues ‘disappeared’ after the hotel was closed down in 1974. I started my job at the Halifax Building Society at 28 Bank Street, Bradford (the adjoining building to the former Talbot Hotel) in September 1975. At that time the statues were still present. One day, shortly after I started work there, some workmen came and removed the statues in broad daylight. I guess no-one would have challenged them, assuming them to be on authorised business.

I used to pass it every day as I walked to school and we used to say " good morning" to the talbots. They were removed in the 1970s but I have seen them since. Firstly in  an antique shop in Ripon and about ten to fifteen years ago inside the Square and Compass in North Rigton. I ate there recently and the talbots are no longer there.
