The Smithy was situated at 6 Southgate and closed
in 1996. Previously known as The Burns Hotel.
I recall circa 1988ish having a lunchtime pint locally with work colleagues
in a very old whitewashed pub building in the Southgate area of Bradford.
Southgate then was a row of very old buildings behind Sunwin House
(Coop) on a very slight hill. The pub eventually closed and a few years
later the street of buildings were flattened and it stayed like that for
years and years. The
massive building built on the site of the row of old buildings (including
The Smithy) in Southgate is occupied by a 'Jurys Inn' hotel / restaurant /
bar and 'Provident Financial'. |

This
was mainly a metaler’s, and goth’s pub, though not exclusively; there was
always the old man in the corner with his pint and paper. I remember some of
the regulars holding an impromptu game of baseball outside in the car park.
A nice pub, shame its gone. |
