The Maypole Inn was situated on Castle
Gate.
In 1724 William Houghton an "inn holder
of Wribbenhall" bought a dwelling and garden for £75. Included in the
transaction was a half acre ridge of land by the Bewdley-Kidderminster road.
This land and buildings became the Maypole Inn. William left The Maypole to
his wife and by 1761 his son Benjamin possessed it. The inn passed to
William Carter and in 1761 a adjoining piece of land was bought and laid out
as a bowling green.
An Advert in Berrows Worcester Journal on Nov 1st 1764 offers the large
Maypole Inn and bowling green for let. The description gives some idea of
the public rooms.
"At Wribbenhall near Bewdley Worcs. The Maypole House and Bowling Green with
two large rooms to accommodate Company Balls or assemblies, likewise
exceeding good Cellaring capable of holding 30 Hogshead of Liquor, Good
Stabling and other necessary Buildings, as also a good Garden and close of
land."
In 1765 it is referred to again:
"On Wed 2nd July next, There will be a Publick Breakfast at Mr Benjamin
Houghtons at the Bowling Green in Wribbenhall at 1/- each person. Likewise a
Ball at night at 2/6d each. Tickets to be had at the Angel, Bewdley and at
the Golden Lion in Kidderminster. Those Ladies and Gentlemen who please to
attend will greatly oblige their humble servant Benjamin Houghton."
But by 1767 notwithstanding these social events the Inn with its stables,
brewhouse, cellars and a large bowling green was for sale. It appears that
by 1803 the property was no longer an inn was offered for sale by auction at
the Black Boy & Raven.
The building was later divided into two private properties and in 2003 The
Rock House and Castle House occupied the site. |
