Rose & Crown

The Rose & Crown was situated on the High Street. This grade-II listed pub is now used as a restaurant of the same name.


Listed building details:
Inn. C16 timber-framed house, rebuilt in present form C17, south front refaced late C17, bay added to west late C18, Cl9 rear additions. Square-panelled timber-framing to rear, flint and limestone bands to front, cob to west bay, thatched roof with brick stacks. Probably open-hall plan in C16, now much-altered C17 plan with rear additions. 2-storey, 6-window front. 6-panelled door to left of centre has tiled canopy and chamfered doorcase, to right is 20-pane and 16-pane sash, to left is one 16-pane sash. First
floor has six recessed chamfered 2-light mullioned windows. One-bay addition to left has chamfered recessed 2-light mullioned window to ground floor and one 20-pane sash to first floor. Left return has C20 casement to ground floor. Right return has external brick stack with offsets, attached is C20 flat-roofed extension. Rear has single-storey brick lean-to extension with Roman-tiled roof, to left is C20 flat-roofed extension, to right is C19 attached single-storey addition in cob with pantile and Roman tile
roof and casements. Interior has timber-framed rear wall, now within C19 lean-to extension. C16 roof recorded by RCHM has smoke-blackened timbers, two tiers of purlins with some curved wind braces; evidence of screeens passage and division between lower service end to east and the open hall to west. Cl7 inserted ceiling has deeply chamfered beams with step and runout stops. Fittings are mainly C19, including 4-panelled doors. C20 remodelling of ground-plan.
