I was born at 123 College Street, one
of 8 terraced houses, on the other side of College Street, adjacent to the
railway. The site is now part of the school. The George Elliot hospital had,
in April 1955, an outbreak of gastro-enteritis hence me being born at home.
As a child I used to run errands for our neighbour, Charlie. I had to go
over to the off licence at ‘The Jollies’ to get Charlie 4oz of twist,
chewing tobacco so I presume Charlie was an ex miner. My parents were
regulars at the Jollies and I remember many a cold summers evening sitting
in the Jollies garden with a packet of crisps and bottle of Vimto. Inside
the Jollies was a circular area enclosed by spaced timbers, ‘The Snug’.
