The Newburgh Arms was situated on School Hill
and is now used as a private residence. |

My great grandfather Walter Edwin Freed
and his wife Alice were the proprietors of this pub at the close of the 19th
century and during the early 1900's. Alice ran the pub as Walter worked for
the Duke of Norfolk. |

I was a customer in 1968-1969, when I
was a schoolmaster at what was then called Lindfield School (now, I
understand called Slindon School or Slindon College).
If Master on Duty, and taking prep, I would occasionally slip down for a
swift pint during the half-time break. In those days the school was redolent
of Llanba (Decline & Fall) – only less organised! We were an SCR of just
three masters; had about 40 pupils aged 9 to 18 ........and had just been
Recognised as Efficient by the Department of Education!
My O Level pupils did surprisingly well: I was 18 years old at the time. |

I was a customer of the Newburgh Arms
at about the same time – late 1960s.
The Greater London Arts Association held their Youth Summer Art School at
Slindon House nearby. I was 17 or 18 at the time, and a bunch of maybe 30
people my own age stayed there for a fortnight painting, drawing and so on.
Some evenings we would go out the back gate and visit Bill and Amy, then
well into their sixties, I would have thought, in the Newburgh Arms. Nobody
had much money so halves of mild were a favourite drink while we played
darts.
It was a great time and I remember it well. |
