The Bell & Anchor was situated on Main Road. This pub was present in 1969, however has now been demolished with flats built on the site.

My paternal grandfather, John Henry (Harry) Dart was the publican there from 1934 to 1950.. When he retired, my grandparents had a small cottage built on the plot next door, which they called “Appledore”. I visited there when I was a child in the 1950s. I have not been able to find any interesting photos of the pub from those days. But I do have in my possession the ‘bell’ that resided on the bar so that a patron could get the attention of the bar tender. My grandfather was not tee-total, but he had a rule never to drink in his own pub, only if off duty and visiting another pub. That way he didn’t start down the slippery slope when customers would offer to buy him a drink.
