This pub dated from c1800 and was much altered over the years. Closed in the late 1990s/early 2000s. It was demolished c2011 and replaced with town houses as part of the River Arun East Bank regeneration scheme.

This was the place for debriefing of the Littlehampton Inshore Lifeboat crew , after every shout, hoping that we got back, and had finished washing down & refuelling the boat (Blue Peter 1), before closing time! The crew also met there for homemade & kidney supper from time to time.

I believe my mum and her family were here during part of WW2. They were:- Landlords: Wally and Molly Woods; Grown up children: Joan Evelyn (oldest), Mary and Jim (twins)
Next door to timber merchants. In the bar was a real propellor which was signed by all, but especially the uniformed. There was a contingent of Canadian aircrews that used to be there most nights. Mum used to go out with a very handsome Canadian pilot, with red hair, known as Ginger. She broke her heart when he was shot down. In the 50s and 60s my grandparents lived on South Terrace. Across the green from The Beach Hotel. Sadly knocked down long before The Britannia. They also had other pubs in the area but sadly I have no information. They all lived in NZ until shortly before the war. I do recall granddad also was curator of a little museum in Littlehampton. It was inside an old house that used to belong to a tall ship sea captain. Inside the house he installed as much as he could from his old ship. Wooden walls, step over and into room doors, etc., and at the bottom of the garden was the ‘blunt end’ of the ship! It was quite amazing.
