Shirley Poppy

The Shirley Poppy, Wickham Road, Shirley, Croydon, Surrey. The pub was named after the flower that was created from 1880 onwards by the Reverend William Wilks, vicar of the parish of Shirley in England.

It closed c1987. Rumour has it that Wetherspoons was interested in reopening the pub but ultimately it was reopened as another McDonald’s outlet.
Until about 1935 there was no pub in Shirley as it was little more than a location with a windmill.  With the development of new estates in the area a pub was needed and permitted. It was logical to name it after the flower.
The Shirley Poppy had a large function suite to the rear, specialising in wedding receptions. In the mid 1980's there were often live music gigs in this room. Approximately 1986/1987, it was closed down and reopened as 'Papaveros' (Italian for 'poppies'). The large bar remained at the front, but the function suite was transformed into a trendy restaurant specialising in pizza and pasta. The ceiling was adorned with surfboards and sails firmly attached from above. A small seating area was also available for cocktails. The air-conditioning was always pumping out very cool air.
My friend, Steve Salt and I used to go regularly to this pub. We were members of the local branch of CAMRA and the meetings were held here. I am saddened to see it is no more. On the other hand I am pleased to say I am friends with one of the founding members of CAMRA and we visit lots of pubs here on IoW
