I lived nearby in Rochford Way from 1939 to 1956. Although the name 'The Jolly Gardeners' was on the signs outside throughout that time it was never known by that name, it was only ever described as the 'The Red House'. There was a 630 trollybus stop outside and even London Transport and the conductors referred to it as 'The Red House' stop. It was one of two pubs each on either side and next to the Mitcham Common at the Croydon end. The pub on the other side of the common at the Mitcham end was known as 'The Blue House', (which was also not the name written outside).
