Red Lion

The Red Lion was situated on Brighton Road. This pub closed in 2003 and has now been demolished. Although sold to Aldi, it is now just used as a car park.

The site is now being developed by Aldi and should open in Summer 2015.

On the 10th June 1966, I attended a function at the Red Lion, Coulsdon. It was the Annual Dinner and Dance of the Old Walcountians Operatic Society. I accompanied another member and it was the first time we had gone out together. She looked ravishing in a sheath type long pink satin dress, trimmed with white daisies. Her hairdresser had done wonders with her blonde hair and I felt very proud to be with her. We were surrounded by friends and some 80+ people attended. It was hot and as the evening wore on an electrical storm developed. Little or no thunder just lightning flashes.
We were invited to go for coffee with a group of friends to a house in Sanderstead after the D&D was over and the storm flashed around us all the way there. I took her home in my car later and we sat outside her parents house in Wallington until 3.30am before I left her to go home, just a quarter mile away.
It was the start of a relationship which led us to marry on 3rd June 1967 and we will shortly be celebrating our Golden Wedding Anniversary. I was sorry to see that the Red Lion has now been demolished and replaced with a Lidl Supermarket. It will still provide me with a great memory for the rest of my life.

Simon Sutton 1975-1977 My local before I joined the Royal Air Force in 1977. Had some great times there, meeting up for a pint before whizzing off on our FS1E's for a run somewhere. Simon, Martin, Dan, Nick and Mick.... good times.
Sharon Puttock 1997
Reg Couldridge 1955-1964 The pub of my youth, and early manhood. I remember the taxi depot right next door, essential for getting home to "The Mount" or Cane Hill Hospital where I was a student nurse. Good memories of those days and that pub.
