My name is Richard Rogers and I am
retired from the USAF. When I was 20 years old I was assigned to RAF
Mildenhall as my very first posting in 1966. Mrs. Williams ran The Ship. She
was a great old gal. The nights before USAF payday Mrs. Williams used to
give a ten shilling note to each one of our group to spend in her pub. We
would all pay her back when we got paid, usually the next day. Another USAF
guy named Bob Poindexter and I played on the Ship's darts team during the
winter of 1966 -67. Those were the days my friends. |

I lived just outside Mildenhall from 1971 – and
worked in Mildenhall unto 1989 . I remember the original Ship inn by the
Mill , it originally faced the junction of the road as it split towards
Worlington and Barton Mills , it was just about open as I remember , I’m
sure my elder brother had a pint or two there at that time .
The Suffolk pink house shown below is was built roughly on the same location
in the mid 1980’s but rotated to face the river by about 25-30 degrees anti
clockwise and contains some reclaimed timber from the now demolished Ship
inn ( door lintel and some of the internal roof timbers ) I remember
watching the house being built , there was a petition not to demolish the
original pub but there were by now some serious structural issues due to
neglect. |
