The Licensee during WW2 was my Grandma
Annie Cooke. There was a “rose garden “ in the yard behind the pub where I
used to play on my bike. I was four or five at the time
I seem to remember that my Grandma fell down the cellar steps and broke her
leg. Whilst she was recovering in bed I sometimes used to sit on her bed and
she would make up stories about Hitler and draw funny pictures of him.
She had a dog called Bonzo who used to get the dray horses to kick a ball
which he would then chase down the street. I think Courtaulds had a factory
nearby and their workers used to come in at lunchtime for a pint and a game
of dominos. There was a spare room upstairs which held a number of new car
tyres and boxes of soap and I can still remember the overpowering smell of
rubber and soap Christmas there was also very exciting for me even though we
were in the middle of the war |
