The Swan was situated at 124 Common Road. |

Had my first job here in the Summer of
1982. I’d recently turned 18 so was new to everything.
I remember there’s was a Landlord and Landlady (drank snowball’s in the
lounge) and a full time helper - who played Rebel Rebel whenever the juke
box was free. I mainly worked in the bar and never more than a dozen in.
Thursdays busy as it was pay day, Sundays deserted. It was a Banks’ pub and
I remember when beer went up to 51p a pint for bitter customers switched to
a pint of mix which was 50p a pint.
I was working the night England went out of the World Cup when Brooking and
Keegan came on late and Keegan missed the header that would have sent us
through. Not pub TV as we know it but a small portable behind the bar. |

I was the landlady of The Swan from1985 to 1987.
My husband Jeff and I got married whilst we were Managers at this pub. Such
happy memories of living there. Sunday lunch the customers were 4 deep at
the bar drinking Banks mild and bitter, no food sold. The good days |
