The Temple Bar was situated at 21 Temple Street
and is now used as a cafe. |
|
[Wadworth]... first arrived in the
area when it acquired the Temple Bar in Temple Street as early as 1979, then
its only pub in Oxford, which closed in 2010. |

Just around the corner in Temple Street
is the Temple Lounge, now a wine bar but formerly the Temple Bar, and old
Victorian coaching inn. It was run by Ind Coope-Halls until 1980 when it
became Wadsworth's only tied house in Oxford. Finally 15 years ago it became
what it is today. |

I was
a regular customer. The landlord was the best I have ever known. His
name was Eric and he was ex-police, or so he said. Everyone was welcome
in Temple Bar. Homeless, anarchist activists. new age travellers
wintering in the many squats in east Oxford (including me), substance
abuse victims. As long as the clientele was peaceful, Eric was cool. We
respected him, because he respected us. Eric the peacemaker will be
called child of God. |
