Northgate Tavern

The Northgate Tavern was situated at 36 Cornmarket Street.  This pub was known as The Marquis Of Granby when it opened in 1772, then renamed The Leopold Arms c1880, and finally The Northgate Tavern in 1907. It closed on 22nd November 1971 and has now been converted to retail use.

I worked at The Northgate during 3 summer holidays in the late 1960’s.
Landlord was Richard Farrell, a hugely popular Irishman. The pub was extremely busy being popular with visiting summer school students from all over the world at lunchtimes and locals in the evening.
It was the home of the Northgate Militia, a motley collection of regulars who annually commemorated the relief of the City of Oxford (sometime in the distant past) with a flag ceremony and march to the river for a days cruise. It was really just an excuse for a booze up. Richard Farrell moved to London when Ind Coope closed the pub.
