The Crown was situated at 25 Lake
Street. This pub was built in 1860 for Halls Brewery. It later became a
Courage pub, then Morrells Brewery, closing in 1990 and now in residential use. |

This pub was finally owned and run by
Mr. Foley. He still owns the building and he has told me he still has a
license as reapplying is difficult and it is worth more with the licence in
place. The pub is generally complete inside and used for storage by him.
I am a neighbour and did some work for him when he was converting the upper
rooms into flats. |

I was born at my Nan's house 55 Lake Street
which is directly opposite The Crown and as a child remember being sent to
buy bags of plain crisps from the carry out window at the pub which was down
the passageway which is behind the door you can see in the photo. You had to
ring a bell to get service then someone would come to serve. I can remember
hearing all the voices inside and just being able to glimpse the activity
going on. Then taking the crisps over the road we would smother them with
vinegar. |
