The Wheatsheaf

The Wheatsheaf was situated at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Reading Road, being demolished in 2003. This was originally a coaching inn; there were still original stables and associated outbuildings in existence in 1975.
We used to live in Damer Gardens, and then Normanstead, so The Wheatsheaf was pretty convenient for my Dad, Ron Cameron. He went there pretty much every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 1:30 when lunch would be laid on the table. Occasionally either my brother or I, or both, would be dragged along. If so, we would have to sit in the car with a bottle of fake Coca-Cola (made by Brakspear – they could make beer, but not Coke), and a packet of crisps. When it was demolished he transferred his business to the Row Barge.
