The Red Lion was situated at 7 High
Street and dated from medieval times. John and Edward Churchill were the
publicans in 1830 when a bodysnatcher was arrested on the premises, having
left the corpse on a cart in the courtyard. The pub was demolished and replaced with a Woolworths
that opened in 1931. After the store closed in the 1980s the building was
converted for use by a building society and a retail outlet. |
