The Mansfield Brewery
built a new Mapplewells Inn on the corner of Alfreton Road and Nursery
Avenue. It opened on 21st December 1962, and replaced an
old building on Mapplewells
Road that was considered “inadequate for present day conditions”.
The Smith family, who had been tenants of the old pub, continued their
tenancy at the new property.
Mansfield Brewery were still the owners of the building when they applied
for planning permission in 1983 to create a pool room. They created a room
off the bar with space for two pool tables. They also extended the car park
in 1985. In 1990 they were advertising a “fully enclosed beer garden at the
rear of the pub with bouncy castle”.
Following the takeover of Mansfield Brewery in 2007, the Mapplewells Inn was
voted Marston's "Pub of the Year" in 2010.
In 2015 the local council held a meeting to decide whether to agree to a
change of use. At the time the pub was still trading, and was considered a
viable concern. Local residents attempted to claim the Mapplewells Inn as an
“Asset of Community Value”. Despite these efforts, when the matter returned
before the Council in 2017, the pub was by this time closed and the
application to convert to a retail outlet was agreed.
After some alterations, the building became a Co-operative supermarket. |
