White Hart

Date of photo: 2020

The White Hart was situated on The Square. The first license was granted to William Riley in 1731. When the Great North Road was brought past its doors in 1766 it was found necessary to incorporate two houses into the inn. A document in the County Records Office notes the sale in 1817 of the inn, complete with a newly-erected coffee and news room. In 1875 the premises were enlarged by the purchase of a house and shop in Bridgegate, adjoining the inn on the west side. The buildings behind the shop were already part of the White Hart. A grade-II listed building.
