The Wing Tavern was situated in the Market Place
and is now semi-derelict. |

My great aunt, Leah Barratt (or her husband) was licensee of this pub in
the 1940s Her nephew Tony Thompson was killed in an air raid on Newark as
a teenager in the War. Leah's father Joseph Green was a publican in
Chesterfield, keeping the Kings Head and the Crown in the 1890s and early
1900s Her sister Alice Knight and her husband kept the Fox & Crown in
Newark. This pub closed and then reopened after a long gap. Another
sibling Billy Green kept the Phoenix in Chesterfield from 1923 to 1975 and
was at his death the longest serving licensee of the same premises in the
country.
