Every Christmas I used to take my
grandad, originally from Newark, to Bromley Avenue to visit the cemetery to
lay a wreath (same street he used to live in) on his parents graves. After
our visit we always used to call into the Broadway for a pint before driving
back to Peterborough - he moved south looking for work. I can always
remember him saying that his grandfather laid the floor in the pub when it
was built.
A few years ago (and one or two after he passed away) I visited the cemetery
with my wife. I have to say I was looking forward to a pint in our old stop
off only to find that the Broadway had gone and a care home stood in its
place. It’s such a shame that another old brick pub has been pulled down,
and one to which I had a bit of a connection. |
